Adhesive-Compatible Subassembly Retainer for High-Specification Drivetrain Bracket Systems

Customer Challenge

  • A global leader in drivetrain systems required a subassembly retainer solution for axle, CV joint, and driveshaft bracket assemblies as joint designs became more demanding than earlier retaining methods could accommodate.
  • Earlier generations of the assembly used hot melt resin as a temporary shipping retainer applied over nylon threadlocking on phosphate-coated fasteners. While effective, hot melt resin required heat during application, was dimensionally variable, had inherent problems under cold shipping conditions, and would often delaminate over time. As corrosion-resistant surface finishes replaced phosphate coatings and adhesive threadlockers replaced nylon locking  patches, the original hot melt resin process was no longer a viable solution.
  • The redesigned joint required the retainer to perform two functions: temporarily securing the components together for shipping while also holding the bracket in position on the subassembly.
  • Reintroducing a heat-applied retainer was not an option because the required heat would destroy the adhesive threadlocker already applied to the fasteners.

Customer Requirements

  • Heat-Free Application: Provide a retainer that can be applied without induced heat, preserving the integrity of the adhesive threadlocker.
  • Dual Retention Function: Secure the components together during shipping while maintaining bracket position on the subassembly.
  • System Compatibility: Perform effectively alongside corrosion-resistant surface finishes, adhesive threadlockers, and other materials used throughout the joint system.
  • Adhesion, Flexibility, and Durability: Deliver the mechanical properties required for the updated drivetrain assembly.
  • Compressed Development Timeline: Support product development, evaluation, and testing conducted internationally within a tight project schedule.

Tectorius Solution

  • Tectorius developed a new retaining compound specifically for the customer's upgraded drivetrain joint system. Product development was particularly challenging because evaluation and testing were conducted overseas under a     compressed project schedule.
  • Tec-Stay® 528 delivered the required adhesion, flexibility, and durability without the need for induced heat during application, allowing the adhesive threadlocker on the fasteners to remain intact throughout the assembly process.
  • The solution fulfilled both required retention functions by securing the assembly for shipping while maintaining bracket position on the subassembly, replacing the previous hot melt resin approach.
  • Tec-Stay® 528 has since been implemented in several automotive and truck drivetrain systems, demonstrating its effectiveness in demanding assembly applications.
