Overapplication Recovery: Pre-Applied Thread Adhesive Rescues Failed Double-Ended Stud Assembly for Tier 1 Automotive Supplier

Customer Challenge

  • A global Tier 1 automotive supplier encountered repeated field failures in a high-value double-ended stud assembly used in a seating assembly for major U.S. automakers.
  • The stud assembly featured pre-applied thread adhesive coatings from two competing manufacturers, one on each end.
  • Neither end met required retaining torque specification values.
  • Multiple field failures of the complete fastener system had already occurred.
  • A large quantity of parts had already been manufactured, making scrap an expensive and unacceptable outcome.
  • The stud assembly included a plastic bushing and spring clip, ruling out standard chemical adhesive removal methods.

Customer Requirements

  • The tier 1 supplier approached the Tectorius engineering team with specific constraints and a clear objective.
  • Remove or remediate the existing failed adhesive coatings from both ends of the stud.
  • Apply a high-performance pre-applied thread locker capable of meeting retaining torque specifications.
  • Preserve the integrity of the plastic bushing and spring clip throughout the process.
  • Avoid scrapping the existing inventory by identifying a cost-effective rework solution.

Tectorius Solution

  • After extensive engineering evaluation, Tectorius identified a solution that avoided removal entirely and delivered results far exceeding the original specification.
  • Testing confirmed that Tectorius Tec-Bond® pre-applied thread adhesive could be applied directly over the existing failed competing coatings, eliminating the need for removal.
  • Post-application removal torque jumped from the failed 4 Nm to over 20 Nm, far surpassing the required specification.
  • The plastic bushing and spring clip were fully preserved throughout the application process.
  • The tier 1 supplier adopted this solution across the existing parts inventory, avoiding significant replacement costs.
  • The outcome demonstrated Tec-Bond®'s ability to perform reliably even in overcoat applications involving incompatible competing materials.
