Heat-Activated Thread Retention for High-Performance Engine Assembly
Customer Challenge
A performance automotive manufacturer specializing in high-output supercharged engine builds required a fastener retention solution capable of withstanding the extreme under hood environment of a modified powertrain.
Supercharger attachment fasteners were exposed to sustained mechanical vibration, elevated temperatures, and harsh chemical environments, creating a high risk of fastener back-off over time.
Standard threadlockers on the market fell short: they either locked fasteners permanently or lacked the thermal activation properties needed for a fully assembled, running engine.
The application also required low-volume quantities suitable for aftermarket service kits, a constraint that eliminated most commercially available products.
Customer Requirements
Vibration and Thermal Resistance: Reliable thread retention under sustained mechanical vibration and elevated temperatures of a running, supercharged engine.
Post-Assembly Adjustability:Fasteners remain fully adjustable during and after initial assembly, enabling precise fitment and final tuning before locking is triggered.
Heat-Activated Secondary Lock: A secondary bonding reaction triggered by engine operating heat, ensuring fasteners are locked only after all adjustments are complete.
Extended Shelf Life: Indefinite storage without degradation, supporting inclusion in low-volume aftermarket service kits.
Dry, Ready-to-Install Deposit: Pre-application days or weeks before assembly with a dry-to-touch finish that does not interfere with handling or installation.
Tectorius Solution
Working with the Saleen engineering team, Tectorius determined that no commercially available threadlocker could simultaneously deliver adjustability, heat-activated secondary locking, and indefinite shelf life. Vibra-Stop® Grade 9 (Heat-Activated) was proposed as the purpose-built solution.
Vibra-Stop® deposits a dry-to-touch coating on fastener threads at the time of application. Unlike liquid anaerobic threadlockers that begin curing on contact, the coating remains inert during storage and initial installation, keeping fasteners fully adjustable throughout the assembly and tuning process.
Once the engine reaches operating temperature, the heat-activated bonding reaction is triggered, locking fasteners in their final adjusted position and giving the engineering team full control over the assembly sequence.
Because Vibra-Stop® can be applied weeks before installation and stored indefinitely without performance loss, it was qualified for Saleen's aftermarket service kits, ensuring long-term availability for field maintenance and replacement.
