Understanding Threadlockers: A Quick Guide for Engineers & Manufacturers

Thread lockers are essential for preventing loosening and displacement while ensuring reliability in fastened joints. They generally fall into three main categories, each with distinct properties and applications. At Tectorius, we’re proud to offer the industry’s broadest range of thread locking solutions, covering all three categories.

1. Epoxy-Based (Tec-Bond® 235, 251, 240, 261)

Traditionally supplied by 3M until their exit from this market in 2023, epoxy remains the workhorse of the adhesive industry and is safe for most plastics. Tectorius provides replacement solutions with Tec-Bond 235 and Tec-Bond 251, direct substitutes for 3M™ Fastener Adhesive 2353 and 2510. These grades deliver strong bonding performance and effectively seal leak paths. Suitable for a wide range of fastener sizes and finishes, they require no heat or primers and cure in place after installation. Like acrylics, they are typically applied at service centers in large volumes (>100k per P/N).

Tectorius is also the only company offering a hand-applied, pre-applied solution in this category, which is plastic-safe. Our Tec-Bond 240-IN is a next-generation, water-based product that users can easily apply themselves. Comparable to 3M 2353, it is RoHS and REACH compliant, features very low toxicity, performs well on stainless steel, and produces no outgassing. Despite being water-based, it dries quickly for efficient application. Tec-Bond 240-IN (industrial grade) is available in both cost-effective small containers and traditional 19kg buckets.

For micro-screw applications, we recommend epoxy-based materials such as Tec-Bond 235-PR and Tec-Bond 240-PR (PR = Precision Grade), which are engineered for fine-detail applications.

2. Acrylic-Based (Tec-Bond® P-Series)

The Tec-Bond P-Series is an acrylic-based locking solution. Designed primarily for high-volume applications, they are generally applied at service centers, with orders typically exceeding 100k per P/N. Other products in this category include related products from Loctite® and Precote®.

Tec-Bond P-Series combines microencapsulated reactive elements with a quick-curing resin system, delivering consistent torque values and reliable thread locking without the need for heat or primers. Offered in a variety of strengths, viscosities, and colors, it is well suited for production coating and provides fast fixture times under typical conditions.

While effective, acrylic-based products are not recommended where plastic contact is possible, as they may cause gradual degradation such as crazing over time, as well as outgassing that can fog lenses and screens.

3. Non-Reactive Types (Tec-Lok™, Vibra-Stop®)

Traditionally represented by nylon patch products, this category relies on inert interference action and is also plastic-friendly. Nylon patch must be applied at service centers in large volumes. Tectorius offers nylon patch solutions under the Tec-Lok brand, available in both powdered and liquid nylon grades. Some grades may be applied by small quantity users. Tec-Lok provides flexible 90°–360° coverage, resists most automotive fluids, and can be customized in multiple colors and viscosities to meet assembly needs.

As an alternative, Tectorius offers Vibra-Stop, which functions much like nylon patch but is supplied in small containers, making it ideal for direct user application. Vibra-Stop is a vibration-damping coating that holds parts securely in place even under extreme vibration. Unlike anaerobic adhesives, it adheres to a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and wood, while allowing parts to be adjusted, removed, and reused multiple times before reapplication is needed. Vibra-Stop is available in small containers, making it ideal for direct users, at the office and at home.
